Brain Rocks, Coyote Buttes North, Utah

Brain Rocks, Coyote Buttes North, Utah

Among the many geological oddities within the Coyote Buttes North area is a feature often referred to as "Brain Rocks" appear in a couple of places. Most notably, there is a region of Brain Rocks that appear just above the areas crown jewel, The Wave. But these particular rocks appeared along the side hike that we took looking for the Lace Rock while still on the Utah side of the hike.

After climbing some distance we were looking at a wide expanse of fairly steep slickrock, the lace rocks above, sweeping wave-like sandstone in front of us, and these Brain Rocks up to our left. I struggled with a framing that I particularly liked, and subsequently struggled with a crop that I liked, but found this to work for me. I ultimately chose this perspective as a distinct formation appeared about a mile in the distance which fell between the two large domes in the foreground.

As I've said previously, I'd have loved to have more blue sky for our day hiking to the Wave, but it appeared from time to time, and so long as there's at least one patch breaking up the white clouds I am happy with the results. You can see more photos from our trip in our group photo pool, and also among my fellow hikersSuad, John, and Scott.
