El Capitan, Arizona

El Capitan, Arizona

I've posted other shots of this fantastic peak before, but I believe they've all bee nighttime shots done under moonlight. The peak, known to some as El Capitan and to others as Agathla, is a massive volcanic plug standing in stark contrast to the level ground that surrounds it. It is unmissable as one drive towards Monument Valley from the south, as it is right off the road. In fact, I believe we really only pulled off the main highway for this location.

Although we had plans to return to Agathla after shooting Monument Valley in the afternoon we decided to shoot it during daylight as well, particularly because the clouds behind it was really very photogenic. I felt a black and white treatment was the best way to highlight the clouds, and it let a lot of the texture of the peak itself come through.
